After several years of working in molecular research, Curtis Petersen decided to try to understand how macro factors influenced the micro systems he had been working with and studying. His interest led him to study epidemiology as a master's student at The Dartmouth Institute where he focused on breast cancer. In 2014, he helped start a remote medical sensing group that seeks to determine how we can best use technology and big data to help people manage their health. This process spurred him into thinking about how we might be able to use this information to interpret epigenetic changes. Petersen's current research interests include examining next-generation phenotyping and bridging the gap between the exposome and disease. He aims to link the huge amount of data that we are now continuously collecting from people to molecular changes and genetic expression. He is of the opinion that our health systems can be greatly improved through advanced analytics of data directly impacting patients, and he hopes that this work will help influence how policy is shaped and how we measure quality health care.
