The Center for Health Policy Research at The Dartmouth Institute

The Brookings-CHPR Collaborative

In 2007, the Center for Health Policy Research within The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice and the Brookings Institute's newly created Engelberg Center for Health Care Reform established a partnership focused on healthcare reform. The collaboration will address topics such as payment policy, quality improvement, and delivery system redesign. The centers' directors - Elliott Fisher, MD, MPH and Mark McClellan, MD, PhD respectively- bring a wealth of knowledge from the policy, regulatory, and research spheres of healthcare.

As an initial project, the collaboration is focused on developing a proposal for Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) based on the principles of increased accountability, performance measurement, and shared savings. Dr. McClellan, Dr. Fisher, as well as Dartmouth and Brookings staff have made numerous appearances across the country discussing these ideas. Dartmouth and the Engelberg Center at Brookings will host a joint conference on March 11 in Washington, DC to further explore the ACO model. Panelists will examine how ACOs can improve health care value, detail how they can be adopted by both Medicare and the private sector, and highlight key implementation challenges.
