Short Bio

Mary is Professor of Medical Sociology in the Department of Health Sciences, University of Leicester, UK; Deputy Editor-in-Chief of BMJ Quality and Safety; and a member of the Health Foundation’s Improvement Science Development Group. She leads a major research program focused on healthcare improvement and safety, ethics, and methodological innovations in studying healthcare. Mary is an Adjunct Professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where she collaborates with Peter Pronovost and others, and a Visiting Professor at Imperial College, London.

In 2012, Mary received the Wellcome Trust Senior Investigator Award that is given to “world class scholars asking the most important questions at the interface of science, medicine and the humanities.” She is a graduate of Dublin City University, Trinity College Dublin and the University of Oxford.
