Bio

Karen Schifferdecker is the Director of the Center for Program Design and Evaluation (CPDE) at Dartmouth and an Associate Professor at The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice and Community and Family Medicine at the Geisel School of Medicine. A medical anthropologist, she has over 20 years of experience overseeing and conducting research and evaluation of projects and programs in institutions, clinical sites, and community-based settings using mixed methods. As director of CPDE, she has overseen the evaluation of over 50 projects and grants awarded from multiple foundations and agencies, including the National Science Foundation, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Institutes of Health, and the Administration for Children and Families. Her mixed methods publications have been cited multiple times, including in a guide book by NIH on “Best Practices for Mixed Methods Research in the Health Sciences” and as an excellent example of a mixed methods design for health services research in the book “Mixed Methods in Health Sciences Research” by Curry and Nunez-Smith, 2015.

Schifferdecker earned a BA from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, an MA and PhD from the University of Connecticut, and an MPH from Dartmouth College.

Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), which are generic or condition-specific, are used for a number of reasons, including clinical care, clinical trials, and in national-level efforts to monitor the quality of health care delivery. Creating PROMs that meet different purposes without overburdening patients, health care systems, providers, and data systems is paramount. In a recent study in collaboration with researchers at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine and multiple clinical sites, Schifferdecker and colleagues at CPDE tested a generalizable method to incorporate condition-specific issues into generic PROM measures to produce PROMs that efficiently provide a standardized score.
